Conquest of Southern Italy and Sicily

Picture
When one mentions the Norman Conquest, one immediately relates that event to 1066 England whereas the Norman Conquest of Southern Italy and Sicily occurred much earlier between 999-1194 and involved numerous battles.  Many territories were conquered independently, and only later were they unified into a single state. Compared to the conquest of England, it was unplanned and disorganized, but equally complete.

In April 2026, a proposal was brought before the ONC membership where it gained approval to create and offer acceptance into a subsidiary society where one can prove descent from one/both recognized principal leaders and conquerors of the period, Robert ‘Guiscard’ and Roger de Hauteville, sons of Tancred de Hauteville, an 11th century Norman petty lord.  There are several proven lines back to them through existing gateway ancestors. See the link to the lineage charts below.

This subsidiary society is entitled The Norman Conquest of Southern Italy and Sicily ("CSIS"). ONC membership is required and those with eligible gateway ancestors are invited to apply.  The Charter period began immediately following the 2026 Hereditary Week ONC Luncheon and expires April 14, 2027. Each ONC member will be emailed an eligibility form with charts.

In order to apply for membership you must be a life member of the Order of the Norman Conquest and you must be able to prove your lineage back to Robert "Guiscard" or Roger de Hauteville (sons of Tancred de Hauteville).

Should you be interested in CSIS membership, download and fill out the CSIS Eligibility Form (fillable) and email it to the Registrar/Genealogist, Jodi Stevens, [email protected].

The lineage charts available through the link below are guides to assist you in determining your eligibility by locating a connecting ancestor and the path you wish to take back to one of the de Hauteville brothers.
